Despite the positives, some question whether technical problems will hinder its development because the powerline medium is a harsh environment for communications. Roy Suryo, a telecoms analyst and lecturer at Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University, says the idea of sending Internet data using the powergrid has been around for a few years. But, it has spikes, ebbs and surges, which would disrupt the flow of data. The powergrid signal is also less secure than that of a network that runs over a phone line as the signal is shared point-to-multi-point .
